General Information
Learning the laws regulating the use of firearms is a must for responsible ownership. Local regulations differ and laws vary from state to state. Citizens must check with the jurisdiction where the firearm is to be carried.
In Idaho, law enforcement agencies are required to follow local, state and federal guidelines when performing the necessary background checks for issuing Concealed Weapon Permits (CWPs). Due to the detailed nature involved in conducting these background checks, processing times can take up to 12 weeks. You will be notified when all required background checks have been completed.
If you meet the requirements listed under the corresponding permit you may apply for a Concealed Weapons permit.

Concealed Weapon Permit Requirements: must meet ALL requirements
Applicants are required to provide proof of firearms training at the time of application [Idaho Code (§)18-3302(9) – Idaho’s Concealed Weapons law]. Accepted forms of proof include:
-
- Completion of a hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game or a similar agency of another state.
- Completing a National Rifle Association (NRA) firearms safety, training, or hunter education course.
- Completion of a firearms safety or training course offered by a law enforcement agency, community college, college, university, private or public school, or firearms training school, using instructors certified by the NRA or Idaho State Police.
- Completion of a law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class for security guards, investigators, special deputies, law enforcement agencies, or security enforcement agencies.
- Evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in an organized shooting competition or military service (active military ID or DD-214 which documents an Honorable Discharge).
- Completion of firearms training, safety courses, or classes conducted by a state-certified or NRA-certified firearms instructor.
Proof of firearms training is required in order to get a concealed weapon license. You can take an online concealed weapons course offered by the Idaho Sheriff’s Association to meet the requirement for the standard concealed weapon license.
There are additional license requirements needed to get an enhanced permit. Enhanced permits require an 8-hour training from an approved instructor.
If you are age 18 to 21, you must meet the requirements of an enhanced permit. Your under 21 CWP will expire on your 21st birthday and you will have to complete the renewal process at that time. There is not a separate or reduced fee.
Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit
Applicants will have to meet the following requirements:
- Provide a training certificate approved by Idaho State Police that shows you have attended eight (8) hours of classroom instruction and have also fired a minimum of ninety-eight (98) rounds. The training must have been within the prior twelve (12) months of the application date.
- Provide completed and signed training Certificate of Completion.
- Must be a resident of the state of Idaho for at least six months and must apply in the county in which you reside. Non-residents of Idaho may also apply, but they must have a current valid concealed weapons permit from their resident state.
- Must submit fingerprints with the initial application.
The enhanced permit is not an upgrade to any existing permit but a separate permit will be issued as such.
